The useful dates are not just premieres. They are the moments when somebody changed the job of being Donatello.
Eastman and Laird's first issue introduces four brothers in matching red masks. Donatello's bō distinguishes him more immediately than a personality résumé. In the rooftop fight with Shredder, he is fully part of the physical action.
WHY IT MATTERS: The original template starts with “ninja brother.” The inventor identity comes later.
The second issue brings Baxter's robotic Mousers into April O'Neil's life and gives the comic an early technology problem. Donnie's mechanical interests have somewhere concrete to operate without turning him into an all-purpose inventor.
WHY IT MATTERS: Baxter is an early proof that Donnie works best when another technical mind can challenge him.
Don heads downstairs to deal with a hot-water problem and meets April's reclusive tenant Kirby, an artist whose drawings are being brought to life. The story is a key early Donnie text because curiosity — not gadget-building — pulls him into the impossible.

The television series color-codes the brothers and gives Donatello a much clearer inventor function. Barry Gordon's performance helps define the bright, capable cartoon scientist whose machines can move an episode forward.

WHY IT MATTERS: This is where “Donatello = purple + machines” becomes the franchise's dominant shorthand.
Corey Feldman's voice and Leif Tilden's physical performance emphasize humor, brotherhood and fighting. The movie is important evidence against the idea that Donatello needs constant inventions to remain recognizable.

WHY IT MATTERS: Strip away the lab and the character still works because the film keeps his rhythm, humor and bō.
The 2003 series reconnects with Mirage material while preserving the inventor identity television audiences expect. Utroms, Triceratons, the Fugitoid and dimensional travel mean Donnie frequently confronts technology he did not build.

Ultimate Drako's time manipulation drops Donatello into a nightmare alternate future ruled by Shredder. It is one of the sharpest 2003 Donnie stories because intelligence offers no clean reset button; he has to confront what happened in his absence.

Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz help launch a continuity that mixes old and new TMNT history. Donatello's skepticism and technical mind now exist inside an origin that includes reincarnation — a premise his worldview cannot simply reduce to engineering.

WHY IT MATTERS: Intelligence stops looking like a job title and starts looking like one trait inside a messy teenager.
Paramount's episode synopsis is wonderfully specific: Donnie is weary of using his simple bō against the technologically advanced Kraang, so he creates a remote-controlled robot turtle to fight in his place. The entire 2012 Donnie problem is there in miniature — legitimate frustration answered with a much more complicated machine.

After Donnie upgrades Metalhead's artificial intelligence, the question becomes whether he can trust a sentient machine he created. The episode moves the technology story from capability to responsibility.

During the Technodrome conflict, Bebop and Rocksteady brutally attack Donatello. The survival story that follows entangles him with Metalhead and turns technology from something he controls into something bound up with his own physical existence.

Rise identifies Donatello as a softshell turtle and makes the Battle Shell an answer to that vulnerability. The goggles, armor and tech-bō mean engineering is visible before the character says a word.

WHY IT MATTERS: Rise turns technology from a hobby into literal body language.
The five-issue miniseries reveals Michelangelo as the lone surviving Turtle in a battle-ravaged future New York. Donatello's part of the tragedy is shown most directly in issue #4, “Blood in Snow,” where he and Splinter are killed after a peace mission in Japan becomes an ambush.
WHY IT MATTERS: Donnie's absence becomes part of the Ronin's inheritance. The story does not make him the final survivor; it makes him one of the people Michelangelo has to carry.

The film's younger principal cast changes the energy. Glasses, headphones, anime and pop-culture interests do more characterization work than a giant laboratory. Donnie is smart, but intelligence is one part of a teenage identity.

WHY IT MATTERS: Mutant Mayhem makes Donnie feel current without needing to make him omnipotent.
The long-running continuity reaches its original-series finale after a late Donatello story involving his future self and Armaggon. It is a fitting endpoint for a version repeatedly tempted to believe that seeing the problem sooner means carrying it alone.

The next ongoing begins with the brothers scattered. Donatello's opening situation is strikingly physical: he is trapped in a mutant zoo and forced to fight for wealthy spectators. Even in a continuity famous for his science stories, the new chapter remembers the fighter.
