Rise redesigns Donatello from the shell outward. Josh Brener's Donnie is a softshell turtle who covers his vulnerable natural shell with engineered armor, carries a transforming tech-bō and behaves as if modesty were an inefficient use of processing power. Technology is no longer just his hobby. It is literally part of his silhouette.

THE DONNIE WHO ENGINEERED HIS OWN SILHOUETTE

Rise rejects the assumption that the smart Turtle should be shy, cautious or quietly bookish. This Donnie enjoys being brilliant. He is theatrical about it, defensive about it and occasionally unbearable about it. The ego is not an accidental flaw pasted onto the genius archetype; it is one of the show's main comedy engines.

The softshell decision gives all that technology an unusually strong character reason. His battle shell is equipment, armor and self-authorship at once. Earlier Donnies carry devices that advertise intelligence. Rise Donnie builds the exterior the audience recognizes him by.

It is difficult to separate Rise Donnie's technology from his body because that is the point. The shell protects a biological vulnerability while also giving him capabilities he chose for himself. It may be the cleanest visual metaphor any adaptation has created for Donatello's relationship with engineering.

Josh Brener voices Donatello, while the show's redesign makes each brother a different turtle species. Choosing a softshell for Donnie creates one of the franchise's smartest marriages of biology and established characterization.

The production also gives technology unusually kinetic animation. Devices unfold, transform and explode into silhouettes. Donnie's engineering therefore participates in the show's visual comedy rather than existing as static laboratory exposition.

Rise proves that the genius archetype does not require social timidity. Donatello can be loud, vain, stylish and emotionally evasive while remaining unmistakably the brother who cannot stop building.
