The 2003 series keeps television Donatello's engineering ability but places it inside a darker, more Mirage-influenced world. Sam Riegel's Donnie is thoughtful, technically formidable and often gentler than the people around him. The series becomes most interesting when that intelligence stops being enough.

2003 gives Donatello a world worthy of his curiosity. Utrom technology, Triceraton science, dimensional travel and cybernetic threats are part of an expanding mythology rather than isolated gadget-of-the-week problems. Understanding technology can therefore reveal history, motives and entire civilizations.

But the series' strongest Donnie material attacks the comforting idea that intelligence guarantees control. 'Same As It Never Was' sends him into an alternate future where Shredder has won and his family has collapsed. The episode's power comes from giving the team's problem-solver a problem that cannot be cleanly repaired.

The 2003 series adapts the spirit of the Mirage Kirby material in “The King,” connecting Donatello again with an artist and worlds created through imagination.
